UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
