Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile New Head of State.
After a definitive final ballot, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily focused on promises to tackle rising crime and drastically curb migration.
He consistently cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he issued an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.

Leading Without a Clear Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast will not command an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are counted together.
This political landscape could hinder his agenda, such as a pledge to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a plan for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.
"There are numerous aspects about how a Kast presidency will look like that remain unclear because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political expert.
The expert continued, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However the area with far less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
