Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when stardom dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention loving the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for his club against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham possesses the edge. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. We all must help him and establish an environment where he can [have] his drive against rivals and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”
