The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
An new term emerged several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for physicians to care for a young patient who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost
Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
