Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the win, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.

Playoff Climax

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Other Performances

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
