The Boss Enzo Maresca Calls Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian made a somewhat cryptic statement in his post-match press conference despite earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points propelled Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the mood following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to consecutive outings.

But, when asked about Gusto's contribution and overall performance, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his displeasure over the previous 48-hour period within the club.

"How the squad want to improve has been fantastic and this is the reason why I commend them - because with a host of challenges, they are excelling after a difficult week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because a lot of people failed to back us."

Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City manager continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when asked if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Woes

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.

"I truly commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Over Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous what exactly prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-game news conference where he seemed relaxed, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any particular media reports had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
