Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
