Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
