Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.
He remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released communications revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected Summers' decision to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This news follows after both chambers of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its files on the case.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. The President has said he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his stance on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.
The messages showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.

After the emails were shared with the general audience, the former official stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public roles earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that he was not connected with the institution.
Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
