Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a significant move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17M for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his consent and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mostly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
