Arsenal's Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude In the Upcoming Season

The North London club has declared that its contentious sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The arrangement, said to be worth around ten million pounds each year, was first established and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny is due to the country's reported backing for the M23 rebel group in persistent fighting in the eastern areas of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by declining to meet with the DRC's foreign minister to discuss the partnership.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership mainly to grow their following across the continent.

Nonetheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “jointly decided” to end their collaboration.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the original goals of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to explore Rwanda, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” declared an Gunners' release.

The release further noted that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while executing community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sports throughout the nation.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, portrayed the arrangement as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against the French club in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a banner that read “End the Rwanda Deal” and distributed armbands to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on jerseys.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

During that period, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

At the same time, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the same period that has caused the branding featured on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
